The movie plot summary is a brief description of a movie plot, which gives the general idea of the story without getting spoilered the whole plot of the movie. Movie genre is a thematic category for movies based on their similarities either in the narrative elements, aesthetic approach, or the emotional response to the film. Movie plot summary and movie genres both help determine whether a movie might suit a person's interests or not. In this study, the authors perform genre classification of a movie, given the plot summary of the corresponding movie. The authors experiment with two separate models based on BERT and LSTM and then compare the results obtained by each model. The experiment is done using the IMDb dataset, containing 71 unique genres and plot summaries from 12455 movies. Both models perform similarly well, with the BERT model achieving 95.72% accuracy and 0.19 loss and the LSTM model achieving 95.72% accuracy and 0.14 loss.
