This chapter emphasizes the production of Arabica coffee in the Cerrado biome, which presents stronger soil and climatic restrictions than other areas in Brazil, and the use of management practices that improve soil health. Arabica coffee was introduced to the American continent in the early eighteenth century, with the first coffee trees being planted in Suriname, brought from Java. A novel tillage and management system has proven to efficiently reduce mechanical restrictions to root growth in the Cerrados and involves deep soil preparation and application of lime and fertilizers, enhancing both physical and chemical soil properties. In terms of soil physical properties, the maintenance of adequate soil organic C concentrations promotes lower bulk and particle densities, resulting in good porosity and thus soil tilth.
