ResumoOf course, all is not perfect even in a book as good as this. The major flaw in our minds is the absence of an index.Preparing one for such an information-packed book would have been a real chore, but it also would have been an invaluable aid for the many who will want to track down what all the authors had to say about particular topics. At least two major considerations in the genus, the roofing of cuttings and the scientific and commercial role of polyploidy, are not given significant consideration.Nagging errors in printing, omission, or assumptions occasionally creep in elsewhere. For example, equations (1) and (3) of the quantitative genetics chapter have important factors and subscripts that didn't get printed (p.160-161), an interesting figure showing color differences in two clones is accompanied by a spectral graph that depicts mostly differences in the infrared region (p.475), and the ideotype proposed for selection work presumes that we want to breed for total disease resistance (p.499).In summary, this is a landmark book on one of our most important pioneer genera in terms of ecology, silviculture, and science.
