ResumoThis article aims to analyze and interpret “A Rainy Day”, a posthumous short story by Eça de Queiroz, based on critical suggestions made by Antonio Candido. It is proposed that the polar images of rain and sun, whose competition was duly suggested by the critic as a structural principle of the narrative, symbolize the feelings of frustration and hope on two different levels. In this sense, these poles represent tensions relating to the theme of love, on the general level of human emotions, and relating to the process of modernization, on the particular level of the historical context of 19th century Portuguese society. And the unity between these two different levels would be provided by the worldview manifested in the author’s composition of the work, which is both romantic and progressive.
