Aidan Rooney-Cespedes Filiocht Nua: New Poetry NEW YEAR'S EVE Green Mountain Inn, Stowe, Vermont The day's wan sunlight has not advanced on the dusting of champagne snow this morning's flurry gave to the deck outside our room at the inn; crisped over now in its granular shell, it glistens in the pricked sack of night, a thermometer, nailed to a post, plummeting, and Mansfield Peak, aglow in the distance, its night trails all lit up, is the colours of light. Elsewhere, unlit trails fall in shadowy straggles like tresses down the mountains. So many sweeping shades of darkness save for the vertical beams of a pair of groomers; their slow ascent planes a trail we skied this morning, powder scurrying across the patches of blue ice an unseasonal rain had glazed to the surface. Hard to find an edge, carve a smooth turn, our skis slipping and shaving off the clear NEW HIBERNIA REVIEW/IRIS EIREANNACH NUA, 3:3 (AUTUMN /F6MHAR, 1999), 37-46 Filiocht Nua: New Poetry a white frost that raced exultant in our veins. The cuts of our sheer descent erased now, as I watch you prepare for sleep, let down your hair for the last time in your twenties, the new life you carry within refining your blood for more of that sharp air, then nestling down in its warm amnion, its tiny chambers ticking fast, mnemonically blending the colours of dark. 38 Filiocht Nua: New Poetry TAKE PHOTOS, FOR INSTANCE Eighteen forty-seven, December four, first Saturday. A bitter, rain-stung, corn market day. Signor Morrosini-dandy, photographic artist, bacon and turnips with butter lover, and big man for eating houses-who had begged to acquaint the Nobility and Gentry of the County of Monaghan of his visit for the purpose of taking Likenesses in Coloured Crayons, steps down from the 4.30 Bang-Up, lodges at McPhilip's hotel, shaves, clips moustache, sideburns, and sets up procured Apparatus, Accessories, Specimens. Miss Balfour and Miss Quigley, of the ladies boarding Academy, The Hill, accept the visit of inspection that Signor Morrosini had respectfully solicited, and Signor Morrosini smiles, explains that owing to the superior manner in which his studio is fitted up, and lighted, and the excellence of his new and improved apparatus , photographs can be taken in any weather. Pik-Nik parties, indeed, are his Speciality. Miss Balfour agrees that Signor Morrosini's style of cartes-de-visites, vignettes, cameos, cabinet and life-size portraits bear favorable comparison with those produced in any house in Ireland, whereupon Signor Morrosini conveys his confidence that all orders entrusted to him will be executed to the satisfaction of those honoring him with their kind patronage. The Honourable Richard Westenra of Rossmore and Major Alexander Montgomery of Bessmount have their gentlemen's seats taken on short notice for the term of One Guinea. After a brisk walk twice around the Diamond, Signor Morrosini repairs to Hetherington's in Back Street, where he stands a round for Oyney the grub, leather cutter, Jim Kelly, tallow chandler and soap boiler, and Eddie Murphy, gig and jaunting car maker, and Signor Morrosini is very taken by how they stand in the likeness of being looked at looking in a looking glass's patina of gloom. 39 Filiocht Nua: New Poetry RETRO CREATION Bungalows, God said, Day 1, and up they sprang like buttercups: with lawns and railings, gate; three bedrooms off a hall; a phone that squats on the hall-stand; back door, scullery, red formica countertops. Day 2, God dollied in the stove, and rigged the central heating. The oil-man came and fired her up; but God saw that a cold feeling lingered, and called for back-boilers, slack, aeroboard on the ceiling. Volkswagens, He said, Day 3, to get people out to do a run, round the relatives, Armagh for butter, daytrips to Bundoran, and once a year, two weeks down south, Courtown, Lahinch, Ballybunionwhere He made, Day 4, Strand hotels, sandy beaches, buckets 'n spades, souvenir rock to strengthen teeth, a cliffwalk, a straw hat, promenades, donkey rides, pitch 'n putt, a machine to roll pennies in arcades. And God saw that all...
