Resumo

Significance South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is determined to respond firmly to Pyongyang's provocation, which was likely motivated by a failed rocket test and signs that there are limits to the support the North can expect from its allies. Although recent steps are mostly symbolic, they carry a risk of miscalculation and escalation. Impacts North Korea’s actions are largely symbolic compared to the lethal force it possesses and the nuclear annihilation it constantly threatens. With both sides claiming provocation, continued retaliation risks getting out of hand beyond what either side really intends. China's support for Korean denuclearisation signals that support for Kim has limits; neither Beijing nor Moscow will allow adventurism. Despite Pyongyang’s threats to dispute the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the de facto maritime border, clashes at sea are unlikely.
