Resumo

ABSTRACT: This article considers a lesser known variety of camera movement that emerged between the rise of handheld camerawork in the 1940s and the invention of the Steadicam in the 1970s: body-mounted cinematography, where the camera is directly attached to the operator. Looking closely at John Frankenheimer's film Seconds (1966), as well as examples from sports cinematography, I show how body-mounted camerawork moved across multiple media practices during the 1960s, then reemerged in the 1990s with a new generation of smaller and lighter mounts. Exploring these varied uses, I argue that they articulate a range of different relations between body, camera, and world.
