ResumoThe purpose of this study is to outline the image of Eduardo Lourenço as a critic of Fernando Pessoa, taking into account the totality of Lourenço's texts about the writer, collected in the two volumes of the Complete Works. As a working hypothesis, we analyze the three major refutations of Lourenço's Pessoan criticism: the psychobiography of João Gaspar Simões; José Augusto Seabra's Barthesian thesis related to Caeiro; and the genesic exaltation of Walt Whitman. Along this path, we seek, concomitantly, to highlight, in all these refutations, the recurrence of Pessoa's irony as a fundamental analytical assumption.
