History of Colonial Brazil

There are two objects for writing this article. The first is to trace the general development of the shipbuilding industry in Colonial Brazil. The second and principie object is to study in greater detail the subject in eighteenth century Grão-Pará and Maranhão. As you can imagine, thcre are few secondary sources that deal with the development of naval construction during this time period in the north of Brazil. However in the “Seção de Manuscritos” of the Nation Library in Rio de Janeiro can be found various primary sources important to the elaboration of this theme. Among the most important of this Information is encountred in the extensive documentation of the Luso-Brazilian naturalist, Dr. Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira (1756-1815). His “Viagem Filosófica”, “Memória sobre a Marinha do Estado do Grão-Pará” and “Relação das Madeiras para Construção Naval” form a great part of the basic research involved in the writing of this article.
