ResumoStarting with "Transumância Amazônica", chapter XXIII of Celso Furtado’s book Formação Econômica do Brasil, the present article makes some considerations on that author's position on problems concerning immigration and labour. With the 1877-1880 draught an enormous number of Northeastern labourers moved into Amazônia. On the other hand, the Southern coffee farmers were needing more labour for their plantations and ended by agreeing on the immigration of European colonists. Historically there was nothing to hinder Northeastern labour of being directed to the coffee plantations, but political and social interests only allowed the exit of this labour when the structure of subsistence economy collapsed (due to the draught) and when the European immigrant was already firmly established in the Middle South.
