ResumoThe relationship between names and the history, language and identity of a people is a basic interest of contemporary Onomastics. This study is guided by this principle and aims to visualize the marks of Italian identity within the rural toponymy in the west of Santa Catarina. The study considered nuances of variation, modifications, maintenance and loss of names within the migration history of one of the groups that settled in this region: the Italo-Gauchos. Therefore, 342 toponyms were analyzed from a total of 3.826 place names collected for the Toponymic Corpus of the West of Santa Catarina (COTOPOESC), from official IBGE maps. The methodology adopted is that of Dick (1990), since it is the most appropriate taxonomy for this specific dataset. In order to analyze and classify the toponymic forms, the study considered different lexicographical works and specific studies of Brazilian Italianistics. Most of the 342 toponyms are anthropotoponyms (i.e. names of people, mainly surnames) and hagiotoponyms (i.e. names of saints). The study concluded that surnames and Italian devout Catholicism are the most representative characteristics of this toponymy.
