Resumo

It presents the results obtained by analysing, in the light of information management, the existing functionalities of the LaboratoryInformation Management System used by the Portuguese JudiciaryPolice(JP). In order to meet the proposed objective, it was necessary to carry out a literature review, covering the themes of softwareand information management; describe the functionalities of theLaboratory Information Management System (LIMS) used by the Portuguese JudiciaryPolice;and identify and analyse, in the light of the literature, which axes of information management are included in the softwarein question. This is an applied, exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach. It uses an interview as a data collection tool, as well as documentary research. The research met the proposed objectives and was developed using Choo's Information Management Process Model, published in 2006. From the results’ analysis, it was possible to conclude that the functionalities of the Labway softwareare correlated with the Process Model of Information Management mentioned above, so that it is possible to identify the premises of traditional library work in the software's functions. Activities such as information representation, indexing and retrieval were identified, confirming the interrelationship between the laboratory management softwareused by JPand the competences of the professional librarian.
