ResumoThe Preto Velho’s Celebration or Night of Liberation is an Afro-religious celebration that has been happening since 1982 at May 13th Square in Belo Horizonte city. This sacred celebration opens possibilities for commemorating the 'end of slavery', using references from their own culture and printing a differentiated approach on how to remember the day when, officially, the extinction of one of the worst human existence conditions. This refers to the intense debate about the permanence of precariousness and violence against afro-descendant people in Brazilian society. The square, which is recognized as a place with power of axé or ngunzo, becomes, on festival days, the extension of the terreiro and space for the celebration of life. The opposite of death is the party! (Simas & Rufino 2018)
