ResumoAbstract: This essay studies the relationship between Machado de Assis’ work and Portugal. It suggests that this relationship is much more relevant than usually assumed. Both the son and husband of Portuguese women, a good friend of several Portuguese, and a collaborator in various Portuguese journals and cultural magazines, Machado de Assis was read and admired in Portugal from at least 1864. In the last few decades, however, with the publication of his books in Portugal, his presence has become even stronger than it was in the past.
