ResumoAna Paula Maia's work establishes its relevance on the Brazilian literary scene by depicting marginalized men, be it because of their humble origins or because of the work they do. In addition to the violence and brutalization of their lives, animals appear in this literary universe as a part of the process of dehumanization and interrogation of what it truly means to be human. In Maia's literary world, the presence of animals confronts the humanity of those men and the animalization of human life. The proposed article will analyse how the animalization of men and the humanization of animals occur in the novels Entre rinha de cachorros e porcos abatidos (2009) and De gados e homens (2013). For the purpose of this essay, we bring up theoretical works on biopolitics and the issues motives of bare life by Giorgio Agamben (2002), the presence of the animal in literature by Maria Esther Maciel (2021) and the becoming-animal by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (1997).
