Resumo

This article identifies and analyzes studies on authoritarianism in Honduras between 1990 and 2024. Its aim is to understand the roots and evolution of authoritarian dynamics in the country, recognizing some background since the 1980s. It explores the recent political history of Honduras, primarily from a political science perspective, through a comprehensive review of existing literature on authoritarianism in Honduras during the period from 1990 to 2024. The work highlights the interconnection of political, social, and economic factors with undemocratic practices and is built on documentary review techniques, which allow for the identification, examination, and analysis of a wide variety of sources selected based on the credibility of the author in the field and the prestige of the place of publication. Regarding its structure, the article first addresses the background of authoritarianism in Honduras during the 1980s. Secondly, it analyzes the events in the 1990s and 2000s. The third section focuses on the 2009 coup d'état and its immediate consequences. As a fourth section, it examines the administration of Juan Orlando Hernández, followed by a fifth section that evaluates the effects of the pandemic on Honduran democracy. The sixth section addresses the administration of Xiomara Castro and the LIBRE party, while the seventh incorporates an analysis of the relationship between democracy and environmental authoritarianism. Finally, the conclusions derived from the analysis of literature addressing authoritarianism in Honduras are presented. ECA Estudios Centroamericanos, Vol. 79, No. 774, 2024: 65-96.
