ResumoInaugurated in 1824 in Rio de Janeiro, Pierre Plancher's typography transformed the city's press scene. Elevated to the dignity of royal printer under the protection of Pedro I, the French pressman and journalist played a decisive role in the emergence of theatre criticism during the first years of the Empire (1822-1831). The first French-language newspapers published in Rio de Janeiro also came into being thanks to Plancher's encouragement. In the pages of L'Indépendant and L'Écho de l'Amérique du Sud, which circulated between 1827 and 1828, the opera and ballet performances of the Imperial Theatro São Pedro de Alcântara resounded with vigour.
