ResumoThe enxaimel or half-timberwork route is in the city of Pomerode, in the Vale Europeu region, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Due to its cultural relevance, it was elected by the UN as one of the best tourist villages in the world. The article seeks to identify and analyse the challenges as indicated by the social agents for the sustainable development of cultural tourism along the route and to highlight the best practices to take advantage of the benefits of tourism as a way to preserve the local culture. Due to its exploratory nature, the research is based on a case study. The use of the qualitative research method proved apt to validate the hypotheses. The results indicated that cultural tourism on the route has created economic opportunities for those involved and further emphasised the need for the active involvement of community agents in the implementation of strategies that help maintain tourism in a sustainable way.
