Resumo

Writing an excellent scholarly peer review—as most academics are acutely aware—takes considerable time, effort, thought, and skill. Good reviews not only point out the strengths and weaknesses of a paper in detail with authority and sensitivity but also give significant guidance to authors on how exactly to rectify the weaknesses and bolster the strengths in a revised version, along with invaluable lists of additional sources to help the diligent author do so. Great reviews are constructively critical: encouraging but firm, fair, detailed, and above all useful to the author in mapping out the revisions needed to bring a piece to publication standard. Relatedly, great reviewers advise editors on the legitimacy of claims to original contribution, check and correct facts and data, isolate errors, extraneous detail, and lack of clarity, and identify any problematic overlaps with already published work. More frequently than most authors imagine, they also advise editors if they have reviewed the paper before for another journal, how long ago, and if the paper has been adequately reworked before submitting to the new journal—or not. In so doing, reviewers facilitate dialog between editors from different journals to enhance ethical standards and act as the primary gatekeepers of the rigorous research we expect from prestigious journals. They likewise function as incredibly important, if anonymous, in-career mentors to authors—especially across the two or three rounds of reviews and revisions that the articles eventually published in World Affairs need to pass successfully. For these reasons, and many others, all editors and academic authors are extremely indebted to the sheer hard work that peer reviewers devote to our academic field in general and to each paper they review in particular. They do so in anonymity and, across the social sciences, contribute their time and expertise freely and often. As Editor of World Affairs, on behalf of myself, the Editorial Board, and the many authors whose submissions enter our review stage, I extend our heartfelt and sincere thanks to each and every reviewer who returned a review to us in the 2023–2024 production period. Your tireless and meticulous work—and I am sure a hefty amount of burnt midnight oil—continues to significantly enhance the quality of the research published in this old and very distinguished journal. You are appreciated by us all more than you know. Thank you, one and all!
