An Analysis of Hemiola Rhythm Techniques Used in Popular Music

Resumo본 논문은 복합리듬의 일종인 헤미올라가 대중음악에서 어떻게 사용되고 있는지 분석하여, 목적과 의도에 맞게 사용할 수 있게 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 헤미올라는 수평적 헤미올라와 수직적 헤미올라로 구분되는데, 기존 연구에서는 두 개념의 정의와 사례 분리가 명확하지 않아 연구의 필요성이 제기되었다. 이에 먼저 클래식 음악에서 사용된 예시를 통해 구조를 설명하고, 대중음악에 사용된 곡을 수평적 및 수직적 헤미올라로 구분하여 분석하였다. 수평적 헤미올라에 대한 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수평적 헤미올라가 사용될 때 청자는 리듬의 변화로 박자 전환으로 급격한 속도감을 경험하게 된다. 둘째, 수평적 헤미올라로 음악의 펄스를 전환하는 목적은 가사 전달 혹은 주제를 명확히 드러내기 위해 특정 부분을 집중시키기 위한 것이다. 수직적 헤미올라의 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수직적 헤미올라는 두성부 간의 리듬 불균형에서 나타나는 긴장감 조성을 위한 장치로 사용하고 있었다. 둘째, 수직적 헤미올라의 구조적 공간 확장은 깊이감의 확장을 위한 것이며, 사용 악기에 따라 느껴지는 차이가 명확했다. 헤미올라는 복합리듬의 일종으로, 그루핑, 메트릭 모듈레이션, 폴리리듬과 구조적 차이가 있어 명확한 구분이 필요하다. 본 연구를 통해 수평적, 수직적 헤미올라 리듬을 구분하고, 리듬 기법 활용이 음악에 어떤 결과를 가져오는지 확인할 수 있었다. 헤미올라 리듬 기법 분석을 통해 리듬의 세분화가 명확해져 의도와 목적에 맞게 활용되어 대중음악 발전에 기여할 수 있기를 바란다. This paper analyzes how hemiola rhythm is used in popular music to enhance musical intent and effect. Hemiola is a complex rhythm that is classified into horizontal and vertical forms, but previous studies have not clearly defined or separated these concepts, highlighting a need for further research. Initially, examples from classical music illustrated hemiola structures, followed by an analysis of popular songs categorized by horizontal and vertical hemiola. Findings for horizontal hemiola indicate that it enhances the listener's sense of speed through rhythmic changes, and focuses attention on specific lyrics or themes. Vertical hemiola creates tension via rhythmic imbalance between voices, and structural expansion adds depth, with variations in effect depending on the instrument used. Hemiola differs from grooving, metric modulation, and polyrhythm, requiring clear distinctions. This study clarifies the roles of horizontal and vertical hemiola, demonstrating how rhythmic techniques impact music. The hope is that further subdivision of rhythm through hemiola analysis will support its purposeful use in advancing popular music.
