ResumoABSTRACT Caetano Veloso: Camminando Controvento (Caetano Veloso: Walking Into The Wind) by Igiaba Scego is a book that defies easy categorization. Scego assumes her readers may not be familiar with Veloso’s artistic career, his Tropicalista aesthetic, or the sociopolitical context in which he emerged and established himself in the Brazilian music scene. Consequently, she takes the time to explain these aspects, though she does not frame her work as a biography, essay, or cultural critique. The very idea of explanation is itself questioned when she notes, “It is hard to explain love. So I will not explain Caetano Veloso to you.” In discussing her text, Scego initially describes it as a stream of consciousness and later suggests that she has intertwined the story of Caetano with her own. This essay, however, proposes a different classification based on Scego’s own work. This classification is affective translation-a translation of both the music and the persona of Caetano Veloso. In this approach, it is not the cultural background but the affects-the aesthetic impact generated by Veloso’s work and persona-that become central to the creative process. This essay aims to present, define, and reflect on the concept of affective translation as a potential literary genre, both to interpret Scego’s book and to explore other possible applications.
