Resumo

This article deals with a discursive reading of the novel Essa gente (2019), by Chico Buarque, based on the idea of class prejudice, racial traits, hypocritical discourse and its derivation in the commonsensical discourse of supposed Brazilian cordiality. To this end, we use the epistemological contributions of materialist discourse analysis, especially the concepts of pre-constructed, metaphorical effect (Pêcheux, 2014), irony effect (Orlandi, 2012) and racialized discourse (Modesto, 2021). In parallel, we also turn to Sérgio Buarque de Holanda (1995) and the postulate of the cordial man, as well as the studies on hypocritical discourse developed by Vladimir Safatle (2008). It is possible conclude that the literary discourse of the novel mobilizes a representation of reactionary discursive formations that circulate in the Brazilian society which are reproduced in the novel. The reactionary discursive manifestations show violent, prejudiced and segregationist social dynamics, which are concealed by the hypocritical use of the discourse of cordiality. Additionally, the discussions proposed by Bethania Mariani (2000), Freda Indursky (2012), Jacques Lacan (1998; 2018), Jaime Ginzburg (2015; 2017), Luís Fernando Bulhões (2022; 2024) and Mónica Zoppi-Fontana (2019) are also relevant to this paper.
