O avanço da modernidade foi impulsionado pelo Iluminismo, com suas ideias de liberdade religiosa, liberdade de consciência, laicidade do Estado, autonomia da ciência e contenção da influência da Igreja Católica na sociedade. Na segunda metade do século XVIII, isto levou a dinastia dos Bourbons a combaterem a Companhia de Jesus até obterem do papa a sua supressão. No entanto, esta ordem religiosa continuou existindo na Rússia, um império cristão ortodoxo. Após a Revolução Francesa e as invasões napoleônicas, o quadro político europeu mudou consideravelmente. A ordem sobrevivente foi então restaurada em toda a Igreja. A história rica e conturbada desta supressão e restauração ajuda a compreender a relação da Igreja com o mundo de então, e mostra a capacidade de resiliência eclesial. A reflexão sobre estes acontecimentos pode favorecer o amor à Igreja, a fé na providência e a fidelidade criativa. Abstract: The advancement of modernity was driven by the Enlightenment, with its ideas of religious freedom, freedom of conscience, secularism of the State, autonomy of science and containment of the influence of the Catholic Church in society. In the second half of the 18th century, this led the Bourbon dynasty to fight the Society of Jesus until they obtained its suppression from the Pope. However, this religious order continued to exist in Russia, an Orthodox Christian empire. After the French Revolution and the Napoleonic invasions, the European political environment changed considerably. The surviving order was then restored throughout the Church. The rich and troubled history of this suppression and restoration helps to understand the Church’s relationship with the world at the time, and shows the capacity for ecclesiastical resilience. Reflection on these events can promote love for the Church, faith in providence and creative fidelity. Keywords: Christianity; Marquis of Pombal; Clement XIV; Catherine II.
