ResumoThis paper focuses on the school library, as an important information unit in the citizens’ training, during formal education processes, in school establishments. The general objectiveof the research developed isto investigate the role of the school library and the librarian in the trainingof critical and informed citizens. The specific objectives are: to analyse how the mediation of the school librarian promotes critical reading among students and the impact ofthis professional's presence; identify practices that encourage debate and critical thinking in the school library; examine the strategies used by school libraries to promote inclusion and accessibility. The theoretical framework dealswith: reflection onthe school library; the social function of the librarian; the trainingof readers and childrensand youth literature; inclusion and accessibility. This is applied and exploratory research, using case studies to deepen understanding of the context. The information unit selected is the Gilberto Amado School Library, part of the Federal Institute of Sergipe (IFS) –Polo Estância. The research results reinforce the importance of the presence of professional librarians in the management of the school library. In this way, strategies for reader training will be included in the skills and competencies of this professional, which occur in the service of the school library, in its cultural action and animation and in reading mediation. As a result of the research, it is highlighted that the presence of the professional librarian is relevant to the activities and the very existence of the school library.
