ResumoThe institutionalisation of sociology in Portugal took place within the framework of democracy. This helps to understand the traits that mark and singularise Portuguese sociology, such as pluralism, diversity, multilingualism and interdisciplinarity. All of these have allowed the discipline to develop very quickly, intensively and inclusively. But today we face a threat: the subordination to the purely quantitative and bureaucratic logic of the rules for recruiting and promoting teachers and researchers, funding projects and publishing scientific texts. This logic can destroy the freedom and diversity that are so characteristic of Portuguese sociology. It is therefore essential to combat it.
