Resumo

This study analyzes three journalistic reviews of the film Benzinho (2018), directed by Gustavo Pizzi, and another three of the film A Mãe (2022), by Cristiano Burlan, that were published in the mainstream media by critics such as Luiz Carlos Merten (O Estado de S. Paulo), Eduardo Escorel (piauí), and Flavia Guerra (UOL). To better elucidate this scenario, it introduces concepts from Pareyson on art critique; from Silva and Soares, and from Paganotti and Soares on media critique; and from Xavier on film critique. Its conclusions point to the still low participation of women and other minority majorities in the specialized criticism of the major media and to the importance of the return of screen quotas — which Bolsonaro government interrupted in 2021 and Lula government resumed in 2024 — to value Brazilian cinema.
