Tópico(s)Russia and Soviet political economy
ResumoSignificance Although certain parallels -- such as Donald Tusk’s premiership -- can be drawn to the last time Poland held the position, in 2011, much has changed since then. Poland’s political stability and economic outperformance relative to other EU members, coupled with unrivalled defence spending, gives it the potential to influence the bloc’s future course significantly. Impacts A new EU sanctions package against Russia is likely to be proposed soon. Poland’s alliance priorities could shift from the Visegrad Four to the Baltic states, which share common security concerns with Warsaw. The Polish presidency’s interest in pursuing environmental policies will likely be limited due to domestic opposition. The success of Poland’s security agenda could depend on the outcome of the German parliamentary elections next month.
