Abstract The quasi-stationary gravitational collapse of a uniformly rotating, current-carrying relativistic thin disk is investigated. By neglecting the effects of the electromagnetic field on the gravitational field, a general solution for the electromagnetic field is found which has the same basic structure as that found by Bardeen and Wagoner for the gravitational field. Numerical results are presented for the specific case of a perfectly conducting disk having no net charge, within which the magnetic field is uniform in the Newtonian limit. These results indicate that the electromagnetic multipole moments produced by any disk with zero net charge all vanish as an event horizon forms around the disk.
