ResumoThe intent of this chapter is to review the properties of the sulfate-reducing (occasionally referred to as sulfidogenic) bacteria in general terms to provide a broad framework for the remaining chapters of the book. The chapter is to provide a bridge between material familiar to the general microbiologist reader and the specialized material that makes up the remainder of the book. A major notion, which provides the general structure of the chapter, is that while these organisms seem to be unified by a common metabolic ability, they are in reality an extremely heterogeneous and diverse group of organisms.
