ResumoThe basic principles of constructivist theory are outlined, and the limitations of the theory in terms of providing a worthwhile science education, discussed. A shift in emphasis from personal construction by individual learners towards social construction within the community of scientists and to a view of learning as a process of enculturation - as propounded by Vygotsky - is advocated. Such an approach would require purposeful teacher intervention.
