Resumo

This article tries to study the historical evolution of the several the-oretical explanations about coup d'etat since its first definition in the XVIIth Century until the present. After a preliminary attempt of definition and characterization as a conspirative, violent and juridically iIlegal action often related with usurping political strategies designed by institutions like the Army, this work resumes some basic questions in the current debate about coups: their function as a symbol and ins-trument of modernizing praetorianism, their ties with the socioeconomica! problems experimented by underdeveloped countries, and their role as a cause and consequence of the instability endured by gover-nements politically weakened in their authority and legitimacy.
