EnglishThe article makes an appraisal of what accession to the European Union has meant for the Spanish economy in the light of the structural changes that this integration has brought with it and which have been accentuated with the establishment of the Single Market 1993 and the creation of Monetary Union in 1999. From the analysis of the evolution of the Spanish economy over this lengthy period it may be deduced that the formidable increase in the degree of economic and financial openness to the outside that has taken place has sparked off sweeping changes in the structure of our economy and has a profound effect on its evolution. After pinpointing the high spots ? and some low spots as well - of our European experience, the article concludes by examining the main challenges that the Spanish economy has to overcome in order to capitalise to the full on the potential advantages stemming from belonging to the common monetary area.
