ResumoProsopis transpiration was determined in the dry season, from August 31 st to September 5 th 2001, by measuring water flux inside an active xylem with a thermal sap velocity probe.Field studies were carried out at a site with 53 Prosopis juliflora trees on " São Bento" farm, in the Coxixola district, state of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil.Three similar-sized individuals were chosen for monitoring. The average sap flow was 0.17 mm per day corresponding to 4.4% of reference evapotranspiration.Transpiration values are the result of an efficient control of stomatal opening and closing.
