ResumoUsing total internal reflection microscopy (TIRM) the interaction between a charged 3 µm polystyrene sphere which acts as a probe particle and substrates with different surface charges are investigated. As substrates we used fused silica surfaces and glass plates which were coated with a monolayer of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS). The first is known to provide highly polar surfaces, whereas the substrate coated with HMDS is unpolar. Our results demonstrate that the curves for the obtained potentials strongly vary in both cases which makes the technique suited to distinguish between surfaces of different polarity. The obtained potentials are compared with theoretical predictions.
