ResumoPiedmont Airlines, which began life in 1931 as an fixed-based operator (FBO) serving the Western Maryland town of Hagerstown with flights to National Airport in Washington, D.C., 90 miles away, has been resilient through all the turmoil in the airline industry in the intervening years. It also racked up a number of milestones, since its founding by Dick Henson, a former Fairchild Aircraft test pilot and one of the legends of the regional airline industry. Henson entered into the nation’s first codeshare relationship in 1967 in an agreement with Allegheny Airlines, the predecessor to Piedmont’s current owner, US Airways. It has been owned by US Airways for almost 20 years, but it has not been incorporated into the larger airline’s regional jet plans, leaving it with a fleet of turboprop jets. They still have value, though, and the fleet is all from the same jet family, which gives great flexibility in assigning crews and doing maintenance. The airline is intended to continue to operate as a feeder for the larger airline well into the future, even after US Airways’ merger with America West.
