Resumo

This article evaluates parking charge programs implemented by two employers in downtown Glendale, California, between 1993 and 1995. The programs increased average vehicle ridership from about 1.15 to over 1.5 at both firms, reducing vehicle miles traveled by over 12,500 miles per day. The employers used generous rideshare incentives and consensus-building techniques to gain employee acceptance of the $40 to $50 per month parking charges, avoiding employee retention or morale problems. The programs saved the employers money because they no longer leased parking for solo drivers. The article concludes with an assessment of the transferability of these cases to other circumstances and a discussion of policy implications.
