ResumoMost North American railroads are expecting to increase their maintenance of way budgets in 2004, according to the annual capital forecast survey conducted by Railway Track & Structures. Maintenance of way cost estimates for 2004, and comparison expenditures for 2003, are presented for the seven major railroads and two regional/shortline railroads that participated in the survey. They include: Burlington Northern and Santa Fe (BNSF), Canadian National (CN), Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), CSX Transportation (CSXT), Kansas City Southern (KCS), Norfolk Southern (NS), Montana Rail Link, and BC Rail Ltd. Figures for maintenance of way program cover the following categories: Rail (new rail and relay rail laid), Crossties (new cross ties and relay ties installed), and Surfacing (track miles).
