Resumo

Multimodal terminals, where facilities for various modes are centralized, cut costs for public and private bus and rail operations. This makes possible efficient coordination of routes and schedules for local bus transit, intercity buses and rail systems. Most operating authorities can save up to 15 percent on terminal operating costs and increase ridership up to 20 percent by participating in intermodal terminals. Coordination, management and staffing are usually handled by a local government agency. Operating agencies pay rates based on space utilized and potential revenues. Multi-modal facilities are more cost effective than one- or two-mode terminals. Examples are given of three such facilities. In addition to advantages for operations, passengers welcome the greater convenience.
