Resumo

This essay examines various aspects of the scope and freedom of 16th-century German painter Albrecht Altdorfer's artistic work. Altdorfer's formal-stylistic possibilities and the scope of his iconographic style present themselves as a reflection of the attitudes toward aesthetics and taste of his time, of aspects of religiousness and mentality. They reflect categories of perception (“German” and “southern European”) and the artworks' different functions. Not least important is the fact that “style” does not merely mean the synthesis of individually developed natural abilities and external (actively assimilated) artistic “influences” but also that it is the result of reflection, decision, and renunciation.
