ResumoThis article describes the 25-year history of the Iowa Interstate Railroad Ltd. (IAIS), a through route created on a 500-mile line on former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific main line. Running between Omaha and Chicago, it has won several safety awards and received a $32.7 million Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) loan on the basis of its performance. Recently, it received another $9.37 million in RRIF loans for the purchase of locomotives and covered hoppers. The railroad is also completing a thorough renovation of ties, ballast and repairs of welded rail. The company has also instituted thorough safety programs. Expansion plans include adding track to serve two ethanol plants and one bio-diesel plant.
