Resumo

Access to many airports is becoming increasingly difficult owing to growing road traffic, making the train-and-plane combination ever more attractive as a means of achieving a sustainable transport chain. Belgium is no exception: the road network around the national airport is increasingly congested. That is also affects access to Brussels. An analysis of future airport transport requirements is outlined, both for passengers and personnel. A shift in modal split to public transport is considered essential. The effects of decreased demand and redundancies after terrorist attacks in the USA are considered transient. The Belgian Railways (NMBS/SNCB) are planning to carry out a number of large-scale infrastructure projects in and around Brussels in the coming years. Not only will access to the airport be improved, but rail services in great swathes of Belgium will be given new impetus in the process, by offering direct services to the airport.
