ResumoSwiss International Airlines is on a bumpy path as it seeks to pick up as the successor to insolvent Swissair. It attempted to take over most of the Swissair network and now is scaling back with cost cuts and a more regional approach. Rumors abound that it might have a tie-in with Lufthansa down the road. The regional operations are being made into a standalone know as Swiss Express, which will have costs 20% below its parent. Most analysts argue that it can become profitable only if it cuts off extraneous routes and finds a niche role within an alliance as Finnair and Austrian Airlines have done. Public dickering among the airline, its banks and the government raise more questions about its continued viability.
