Resumo

Moscow's airports have long been considered dreary and inefficient, but the dreariest of them, Domodedovo, built to cater to domestic traffic to Siberia, Central Asia and Azerbaijan, has been renovated and upgraded by the East Line group of companies into a facility that can aspire to Western standards of attractiveness and service. It was accomplished by a private group that enjoyed its first success as a startup brainchild of a 25-year-old businessman in 1993. It began by running international charter trips for shoppers and expanded to full-service cargo work for importers. Its freighters now fly many times per week to China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other destinations, enabling the group to invest some $380 million into the airport. From 2.8 million passengers in 2000, the airport handled more than 7 million in 2002. In partnership with Boeing, it is creating a ground support facility. Aeroflot has invested in upgrading an old hotel into a four-star structure. It has managed to get the only airport-rail link in the city, with bright, clean vehicles. Western carriers may be switching to Domodedovo soon.
