EnglishThis article attempts to analyze the current situation that the Latin American labor union movement is experiencing and to answer the question of whether or not it is in crisis. This task requires an analysis of the following transformations that have accompanied the transition from the model of industrialization based on substitution of importation to the model of transnationalization of the internal market: opening up to the international market; changes in the occupational structure; privatization of state-owned companies; and the campaign against organized unionism. The nature of such changes and their structural backgrounds permit an assessment of the effects of economic restructuring upon the labor union movement, revealing the varied reactions by the movement to the change in the model of development, as well as the scope of action upon which it relies.
