Resumo

This paper presents an expert system for train operation adjustment of the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, called UWS for short. We have applied the problem solving architecture of ESTRAC-III to this system. The ESTRAC is the first application of expert systems approach to railway scheduling problems and the architecture is designed to emulate experts’ problem solving processes on the computer. Based on this architecture, the UWS can generate a practical rescheduling plan for the disrupted traffic, within a short time. The UWS started its operation in 1995 and demonstrated its usefulness for restoring the disrupted traffic during the heavy snow periods in 1996.
