ResumoThe alpha-1 adrenergic receptor, located postjunctionally on smooth muscle and other tissues, has been studied for decades, although not recognized as a specific subtype. Until recently, alpha-adrenergic receptors were not subdivided, and the alpha-adrenergic receptor-mediated responses commonly measured, such as contraction of smooth muscle in vitro and elevation of blood pressure in the intact animal, resulted from activation of receptors now designated as alpha-1.
