ResumoTelematics systems that allow remote monitoring of fleet vehicles are now being used in public works agencies. This article describes some typical applications. Often, the systems gather and transit information from an electronic engine monitor mounted on the equipment. Some use short-range wireless connections that transmit reading as the equipment returns to the maintenance yard; others permit monitoring while the equipment is in use. Full factory installation of some packages is now available from some manufacturers. One such system, available on certain models of Mack truck, is described. It uses GPS signals and Web-based interfaces to pass information back and forth between the equipment and the monitor. Text messaging, point-by-point routing maps and continuous updates of vehicle location are among the features available. Another system can monitor engine health and run time and uses cell phone messages. Some systems also allow downloading of the equipment’s condition for diagnostics. Usually, the systems involve monthly fees and installation of compatible equipment.
