Resumo

Although short, at only 522 meters, the two-lane Oberrieden road tunnel in Germany requires three different tunneling techniques to allow safe excavation directly through a 120-year old man-made embankment holding two railway tracks, under a section of very shallow sandy overburden, and on through a hill of Bunter Sandstone. This article describes the tunneling methods used: barrel vault method, door-frame slab method, regular NATM rock tunneling in Bunter Sandstone, and cut-and-cover tunneling.
