Human-Automation Interaction and Safety

This issue is devoted to an in-depth look at one of the research tools that is enabling UMTRI researchers to bring more information to the driver in an intelligent vehicle-highway system: the Human Factors Division's Driver-Interface Research Vehicle (DIRV). This vehicle, commonly known as the instrumented car, is a 1991 Honda Accord LX Wagon loaded with state-of-the-art data collection and presentation devices. These devices can increase and enhance the information available to the driver and record the driver's responses to that information. The vehicle was designed to study how to make in-car information systems safe and easy to use and to increase the understanding of how people drive cars.
