ResumoThis article describes the AquaGas Model 3 gas generator, which provides large amounts of hydrogen and oxygen on demand by the hydrolysis of chemicals. The gas is produced safely, for a fraction of the cost of petrochemicals, with no storage of gases. The New Zealand company, AquaGas, claims to have created a gas generator which overcomes all previous problems of safety, reliability, durability, cost, size, weight, gas storage, and power supply. The generator produces nearly 3000l of hydrogen-oxygen mixture on demand at 40psi. 1831l of gas can be produced from 1l of water and 6kW of electricity. Its recommended applications include: (1) fusion welding; (2) brazing; (3) soldering; (4) cutting; (5) flame drilling; and (6) underwater cutting. Smart electronics have been used to achieve the process control that makes the new generator possible. AquaGas is continuing its research and development programme. It is now collaborating with Mazda Motor Corporation on Mazda's hydrogen-powered car project, which has been able to develop cars that can match the performance and range of conventional petrol-engined cars. Hydrogen engines have been fitted into the 626 station wagon and MX5 sports car on a reasonable scale.
